Hi Alan, I went through the process about a year ago. It was difficult but I finally got through the process with the help of a very kind spanish speaking lady from this site. If you speak Spanish or have someone who speaks Spanish it would be far easier, otherwise you will need to be determined. Your starting point would be to go to the police/immigration  office in Arrecife. If you know Arrecife it is the office near where the men play dominoes. Go to the door on the left and collect a form that tells you what documents you require. There is a form that you need to download from the national police website and take this to a bank to pay your fee of around 10eu. Before you can go back to get resiency you must register on padron(electoral role) at the town hall. This will probably take two appointments ,one to ask their requirements, which depend on your accommodation . You also must have health cover, privately if you do not have a contract of employment. I hope this helps if you need to clarify anything or need more info as you go through the process email me on [email protected]. Good luck John
