If you are visiting the islands then you have six months where your licence is valid. After this you would need to take a Spanish test which is costly and time consuming. Since 1st May 2022 if you are a resident/non resident and did not change your licence then you are not legally able to drive. This has been a major problem for many expats, but there is a possible light at the end of the tunnel. The Spanish government are in the final process of allowing Uk licence holders to drive again. The British Embassy is urging expats to have a medical test done, the only medical center I personally know is opposite the trafico office in Arrecife. This will give you a certificate of driving ability with which you can then exchange your licence. The certificate is valid for three months.

If I have one major resevation regarding this, it would be how long is it likely to be before the Spanish government get their act together and get this sorted out. Good luck.

It’s just been reported that expats that did not change their licences last year will very soon be able to drive again possibly as early as this week, without having to take the Spanish driving test. But if you wish to drive, get a medical and get your licence changed to Spain. As I said before the place that I have been to for the medical is almost exactly opposite the Trafico office in Arrecife. Get it done and save yourself some hefty fines.
