Could anyone advise best way to emigrate to Lanzarote from UK regarding furniture and personal effects.

Do we hire a shipping container and ship everything in our house or is it easier to sell or scrap everything and then buy again over there

Thanks

Steve

Hi Steve, we did a combination of both - selling/giving away a lot of stuff in the UK and bringing some essentials over via Woodside Cargo who were very helpful.  Having said that, there are a few items we wish we'd brought with us rather than giving away which are difficult to get out here. Nothing essential just cooking items, for example, we were used to having to hand!

Hope this helps.

Hi Ginny

What did u actually ship we are so unsure, what did you do with all your furniture did you sell it with the house ???

I just see shipping items as adding cost to items so thinking literally just clothes and personal items or things of personal value maybe, what about computers and playstation/games etc

Dont know where to start tbh

Any help appreciated

Up to date computer items can be difficult to get such as Apple and Playstations (usually a year or two behind in Lanza, although you can get some items from Gran Canaria - again these are limited - have a look at Banana computer - https://store.bananacomputer.com/index.html).  We sold all our furniture and white goods as our Lanza house was already furnished with these and we've spent the past year renewing most things.  There are fairly decent white goods / electrical stores such as Milar (Playa Honda), Electron (Arrecife), Worton (Agana Centre and Deiland Playa Honda) - all have web sites so can be checked before you sell anything in the UK.  You can shop some items on Amazon (.de, .es and even .uk) but a lot of items cannot be delivered here and some shops refuse to deliver to the Canaries - try setting up a new Amazon account with your new Lanza address and you'll easily see what can/can't be delivered - expect delivery times to be anything from what they say to 3 months!  (I'm still waiting for an item ordered back in October).  If you open web sites in Google Chrome you can install the translator function which is absolutely necessary unless you speak good Spanish!  Get used to using it before you come over.

We also 'culled' our clothes, you don't need so many out here (depending on what you intend to do of course). But again, if you like certain brands - shoes etc., bring those with you as could be difficult to find here.

The cargo companies charge on a 'container' basis - we had a 20 ft container, but then we did have a lot of musical instruments and a very large motorbike to bring over.  Do speak to Woodside Cargo and any others you can find as they should be able to give you an idea of costs which will need to include insurance (based on the value you put on your items - all of which have to be listed in a document per box e.g:  Box 1 of 100 - 'your name' - kitchen utensils.  Enjoy!!
