We have posted in this forum before about our intention of relocating to Lanzarote. We are a gay couple with a child and we have now narrowed our choice down to either Tias or Puerto del Carmen as a potential living location. We would love to hear from some locals about their views. What's important to us is to find community and to feel welcome. Any insights about Tias and/or Puerto del Carmen would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Peter, Tias has a great community feel, some lovely shops, bars and restaurants, you´ll make lots of friend there.  There´s a few tourist villas but most people are permanent residents so you´ll get to know your neighbours.  Whereas Puerto del Carmen is mainly tourist accommodation and if you´re not careful you´ll have a weekly turnover of holiday-makers as your neighbours. We chose to live just a little further ´up the hill´ in Conil, a very small village but again great community and we´ve made lots of very good friends, of all nationalities in a very short space of time.  Good luck with your search!  Ginny x

Hello Ginny,

thanks for your previous reply, which was very helpful. Do you perhaps know what the Candelaria area of Tias is like around Camino de las Claras? We have found a property there we really like, but want to do a bit more research first. Thanks

Peter

Hi Peter, as far as I´m aware it´s a very nice, quiet area. Lots of lovely villas.  I´d suggest you visit the property at different times of the day and different days of the week.  Ask the estate agent who the neighbours are and when you visit the property say hello to them. It´ll give you an idea of how welcoming they are.  Our estate agent knew everyone in our small street as he´d been involved in most of the sales and done his research!  We have a wonderful little community of all nationalities.  Something we took into consideration - a lot of Spanish people keep dogs outside in their yard whilst they´re at work which could mean the dog barks all day long - not conducive to a relaxing lifestyle.  Good luck. x
