Hi everyone, being from the UK we're not used to paying fees for every aspect of personal banking and yet, no doubt thanks to Brexit, we seem to be paying a lot of fees out on banking in Lanzarote (currently with Banca March) e.g. regular maintenance fee, debit card fee, use of atm fee, etc. and have started looking at others to see if there's a way of reducing charges.  We're just after a standard account with a debit card - anyone's advice who has already been through this search and has found the cheapest option would be welcome...

I have experienced the same with La Caixa. I changed my debit card to a credit card where transactions are debited to my account every three days. I also guaranteed that there would at least €750 coming into the account each month and I would pay all my utility bills from the account.  For the moment then I am not paying fees.

Hi, I opened an online account with N26. If you apply in Spain you will have a Spanish eban number. The account and debit card are free. A limited number of free cash withdrawals are allowed each month.

We are using BBVA total online account and no fees whatsoever plus we pay all our utilities through the account. Used for the past year or more and been excellent.

Dear Ianw,

I’m afraid you are misinformed regarding bank charges. We had them here before Brexit, it’s a Spanish norm. You may be pleased to find that there are ways to avoid them as we do now. You may find it helpful to speak to your current bank first, failing that try others that suit your location and circumstances. I hope this reassured you.

Hi Lanzadrums, thanks for your response - might be a daft question but did you have to go through the 'BBVA Spain' app for this?
