Hi, we are looking to retire to Lanzarote with our dog in the next 12 -18 months. I am in Arrecife between 13-18 May to conduct some fact finding and would appreciate any tips and advice on who best to speak to, essential places to obtain information etc. if anyone is happy to accept a coffee from me I’d also appreciate the opportunity to speak to an expat(s) living on the island.

Thanks

Mitch

Dear Mitch,

We came here with two dogs six years ago. We drove dogs from England, Channel Tunnel, through France and Spain to the Cadiz ferry. If moving here obviously you need residency. Definitely seek accurate professional advice from the outset to get everything sorted. The bureaucracy is similar to before Brexit, in effect you mustn’t be a burden on the Spanish state so finance, health and accommodation needs sorting. For the dog seek advice from UK vets and when he/she gets here visit a local vet to ensure Spanish regulations are followed.

We don’t regret a second of being here, the dogs love the climate.

Thanks, it definitely feels like we would make the right decision moving over. I have a meeting planned with an advisor so will cover what you suggest

Cheers

Hi

Totally agree with the reply to your question

But personally I wouldn’t judge Lanzarote by arrecife

If flying the dog over get some references about the company you use some are quite dodgy

We haven’t decided where to live in the island yet but we both like the idea of a small town or village rather than Arrecife. I would be interested in hearing any suggestions.

Cheers

Hello again,

With a dog I recommend you consider basing your self around Tías, Macher, Guime. These are town/village places with Spanish and expat residents. Near airport, shops, restaurants, bus routes. Away from busy holiday spots (Puerto del Carmen (PDC))but close enough to enjoy the life there if you want. Personally I wouldn’t want to live in Arrecife. Definitely use Estate Agents early on to look around, they are really good and helpful. I recommend Lanzarote Investments, Ropers, Atlântico, all have bases in PDC. I’m sure others are good too.
